Jonathan Myerson Katz is a journalist, author, and National Fellow at New America. His first book, The Big Truck That Went By: How the World Came to Save Haiti and Left Behind a Disaster, was a PEN Literary Award finalist and won the Overseas Press Club of America’s Cornelius Ryan Award. Katz was the Associated Press correspondent in Haiti on January 12, 2010, when he survived and provided the first international alert of the deadliest earthquake ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere. Soon after, he broke the story that United Nations peacekeepers had caused a post-quake cholera epidemic that has killed 10,000 people more. Katz was awarded the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism in 2011. He is now a regular contributor to the New York Times and other publications, and is writing a new book about the Marines who created America's empire. Katz regularly appears on TV and radio and directs the media and journalism initiative at Duke's John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute.
